We've now had our new Soay sheep for almost a year now and WOW! We are so happy we decided to get them! They are everything they were promised: they birthed easily, have remained healthy, and shed their wool this spring. The only area they have NOT lived up to their reputation is that they are far more social with us than we expected! The older lambs remain uncertain of us, but the newborns and older ewes are downright demanding of our time and attention. Just another reason people mistake them for goats! One of the main reasons for keeping our Soay sheep is the incredible meat they produce. They turn our rough grazing into amazing quality and delicious, healthy food for our family. Unlike other lamb, this heritage breed browses instead of grazes, meaning they can eat just about anything and thrive. And the taste really is unlike other lamb - leaner and more gamey, this is by far and away the best lamb we've ever tasted. You can buy our lamb from our online farm shop, if you want to try it yourself: 🤍 Slow Roasted Soay Lamb: Ingredients: 2kg rolled shoulder or leg of lamb (boneless - both have great flavour, being hard working muscles - I have used leg here, but shoulder would work as well) 3 preserved lemons 4 cloves of garlic 1 tablespoon of thyme (either fresh or dried) salt Method: Pre-heat the oven to 180c Unroll the lamb, saving any butchers twine or mesh to re-roll your lamb. Slice the lemons into 1cm thick slices and distribute throughout teh opened cut of meat Roughly chop the garlic and spread throughout the inside of the cut as well Sprinkle the thyme and salt Re-roll the cut and secure with your retained twine or mesh. In an oven-safe pan or lidded roasting tin, add a small amount of oil to the bottom and heat. Sear the outside of the roast. Cover and bake for 2.5-3 hours or until the meat is falling apart when pulled with a fork. To serve - gently pull apart the meat and drizzle some of the cooking juices over it to serve. Soay lamb just born last noc at about 1030. Everyone seems healthy. Now I have build a scarecrow and fire off a few shotgun rounds until are Anatolian Shepard pups are old enough. The golden eagles are coming in too close.

I thought I had the lamb back with the ewe only to find it abandoned the next morning so we have a new orphan to care for.
The sheep have short tails and naturally shed their wool, which can be hand plucked (called rooing) in the spring and early summer. About one kilogram of wool can be obtained from each animal per year. Ewes are polled, scurred or horned and rams are either horned or scurred. They are most commonly brown or tan with a white belly, white rump patch and/or white patch under the chin (referred to as the Mouflon or wild pattern). Occasionally white markings on the face and/or body and legs occur. Rarely self-colored (solid color with no markings) black or tan individuals are seen. This breed has extremely fine fleece and, in contrast to mouflon, the inner fleece is highly developed and it is difficult to distinguish an outer coat. This is a clear indication that the Soay are indeed the product of a domesticated breed in prehistoric times. The breed also lacks the flocking instinct of many breeds. Attempts to work them using sheep dogs result in a scattering of the group

As a prey animal, young Soay sheep will practise 'head butting' with their family. This is the last form of defence if they are unable to run away from predators. Soay sheep descended from a population of feral sheep found on the Scottish Island of Soay. They have since been transported to other UK islands and mainland UK. Soays are often used in conservation grazing schemes in woodlands, hillsides and rocky areas due to their hardy nature.

This is a Soay lamb that has been rejected by the flock and left to itself in the field. Iv'e got some milk into it and its getting itself together again. We just came out to find it having a walk around the yard with the dogs. I'll keep it in for a day or so and see I I can get it back into the flock. Its quite a surprise because its at least a week old and feels a solid lamb but it does sound a bit wheezy on its chest, so we just have to see haw this goes on a day to day basis.
